The WISE project: river and wetland information

WISE stands for Water Information System for the Environment. It’s a collection of databases, each containing comprehensive bibliographies of water information connected to different parts of a specific catchment. You can search the databases like the catalogue at your local library, looking for authors, titles or keywords. You can also browse the databases by over 300 subjects of interest. They’ll show you what water information is publicly available for your catchment, and where you can get hold of it. Help screens and glossaries will show you how to get around the site.

Choose a catchment from the list below to get started.

WISE CDs

The WISE databases on this website are also available on CD with which, in addition to the references, provide:

  • video and sound clips
  • maps and photographs
  • descriptions of towns, conservation reserves, and important historic and cultural sites
  • information on typical plants and animals of the catchment
  • key issues in the catchment.
